CRAHI (Centre of Applied Research in Hydrometeorology) is the first group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), participating in IMPRINTS, and will act as coordinator of the project. CRAHI is a Research Center of the Technological Innovation Network of the Catalan Government (XIT), and it is a research unit associated to the Civil Engineering School of the UPC. CRAHI has an important experience on the area of water resources and flood forecasting which arises from the peculiar features of the Mediterranean climate. The areas of expertise cover the characterisation and measure of rainfall properties at different scales, the hydrological applications of meteorological radar, and the development of rainfall-runoff models adapted to Mediterranean basins. CRAHI has fifteen years of experience in developing operational algorithms to improve the quality of rainfall estimates from radars and on the development of hydrological models able to be used on operational flood forecasting systems. The group has participated in the EC related projects HYDROMET, MITCH, FLOODSITE, VOLTAIRE, HYDRATE and EWASE, and it’s also member of the Xarxa de Riscos Naturals de Catalunya, scientific network involving 4 universities focused on studies about Mediterranean natural hazards. It has a wide experience in organising courses, international meetings and dissemination. The relationships of cooperation to develop operational systems for the Water Agency of Catalunya (ACA), the Meteorological Service of Catalunya (SMC), the Spanish National Meteorological Institute, and EGMASA (the emergency agency of the regional government of Andalucia) provide the framework for the proposed work.
